Myanmar’s ruling party concedes defeat while Suu Kyi’s party expects to win more than 70pc of vote

The acting chairman of Myanmar’s ruling party conceded defeat to Aung San Suu Kyi’s opposition on Monday and said he would accept the result of the country’s first free national election in 25 years.
“We lost,” Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) leader Htay Oo said in an interview.

Suu Kyi's National Leage for Democracy has claimed 97 per cent of the first 119 seats counted, but official reports lag their triumphant pronouncements. Counting for the nation's 498 seats is expected to take days.
The party announced that it had won 44 of the 45 lower house seats and all 12 of the upper house seats from Yangon, a party stronghold, in Sunday's general election. It also won all 38 seats in Ayeyarwaddy state, all but one of the 40 in Bago, and 11 out of 19 lower house seats and all 10 upper house seats in Mon state. The trend was expected to continue in the remaining 10 states.
